A sad day on Sesame Street

June 27, 2008

Hi all.

I am sad today. Do you want to know why I am sad? Good, because I am going to tell you, basically whether you like it or not.

On Thursday, we got home from our three week vacation in Europe. On my laptop, I had about 2000 pictures that I had taken with my camera all over Europe. Also I had forty or so movies that I had copied off DVDs. To make thing even more exciting, I had about 250 hours worth of work files saved on the computer. Me, being the tech-wise guy that I am, hadn’t used any sort of backup system.

All was well until Monday morning. I had used it Sunday night without any problems and then I went to sleep. I got up and went to work. Once I arrived, I found things amiss. The laptop wouldn’t boot. Lame. So I went to our IT people and they took it apart. They didn’t find anything physically wrong so they took it to the Apple Store. That was Monday.

Yesterday I sent an email to our people and asked when it would be ready and express that I really hoped that the files would be all right, which they assured me that all was under control and that nothing would happen to my files. Today they emailed me and told that it was finished, that they were going to go pick it up, and that the data was all fine. I was bouncy with joy, and super excited to get my lappy back.

Later this afternoon, I was sitting at my desk when along comes our IT guy, carrying my laptop. He told me, “I have some good news for you. It is working now.” I was like, “Hooray.” Then he continued, “I also have some bad news for you. The people at the Apple Store reformatted your hard drive.” I was speechless, completely and utterly powerless and unable to control what had happened. I sat in shock for a few moments.

My life is over.

Actually, there might still be hope. I looked up some data recovery software and downloaded a demo. It is running right now, as I type this, searching for whatever bits of files are still recoverable. Hoping and hoping that it can save my stuff is all that I can do.

What a fun day. Phuu
